A terrifying entity and folklore from the island of Japan

Tales Beyond Tomorrow

Another day, another urban legend to cover. Let’s continue this journey into the unnatural, and let’s see what's got folks in Japan all freaked out! 💀

The Gashadokuro:

がしゃどくろ

Translated to rattling skull. AKA ōdokuro (“giant skull”)

These are Yōkai 妖怪, which are “strange supernatural creatures and phenomena from Japanese folklore.”

They are skeletal giants towering 10 meters ( 32 ft) high.

They usually roam around the countryside past midnight.

Don’t wander near ancient battlefields or mass graves, they usually dwell in these areas.

Although they have no specific diet, they enjoy eating humans, most of the time decapitating them and then drinking their blood. 🩸

A key feature to look out for is the noise they make when they are around; usually, “their teeth chatter and bones rattle with the “gachi gachi” sound.”

You can feel their presence in advance by feeling a buzzing sensation in your ears. 👂
