Dragon Ball Z made me who I am today

It’s a tragic day for all manga/anime lovers. Akira Toriyama, the creator of probably the most influential anime/manga —some may even argue that it is the best, Dragon Ball —has passed away sadly due to an acute subdural hematoma.

Dragon Ball Z is a series that's close to my heart.

When I was a young lad living in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, I didn’t have friends or relatives I could talk to or have fun with. Being an introvert, making friends was hard for me. My Father would always be halfway around the world attending meetings.

There were no cinemas in Saudi Arabia then, but a guy would come to our compound every Friday with bootlegged movies and shows.

My eyes scanned his collection, and instantly, one of the VHS tapes caught my attention: Dragon Ball Z: The Return of Cooler.

I instantly told my mom I wanted that one, and she allowed it because it was a cartoon, so what could go wrong? Lol. Until then, the most violent cartoons I had seen were Tom and Jerry and some Willey Coyote and Road Runner shows. I wasn't aware of anime…
